We all have stories we tell ourselves maybe we are just pushing down that negative horned devil that too often rears its ugly head, or p’haps we are simply slapping a little spackle over our tattered egos. Whatever the case, we all need to feel good.

We don’t always have a true picture or idea of how others see us. But we earnestly believe that we know ourselves, and how we would act in particular situations.

Time, place and indeed birth order all play a significant role in our development and choices we make …so say studies. We are conditioned ..acc. to Skinner to think and behave according to our belief systems and experiences. But when our beliefs, and views on the world are challenged or put to the test what happens then?? Well ..this is the moment of truth ..grace of God, if you will, intervening at a critical time to steer us toward goodness …(cue the screeching brakes)

When asked ‘Are you a good person?’ How do you respond? Would you say, ‘Yes, I try my best’ and you might list good works you have done in the community. But I think if one were to ask that same question to a truly benevolent soul, there would be no response. A truly benevolent soul simply does the right thing when called upon. He or she does not fain goodness or wish to be good. For he or she ….. there is simply no other way.

Being and doing good is not easy and it never was. That’s why so many people choose to live in the between. But that doesn’t mean that there aren’t good souls among us, because they are all around us, and they show up in the most unlikely personages ….humble, unassuming, but stalwart and strong. I have met some wonderful souls in my travels, and it always saddens me that none of the fine individuals I met were widely known or of any worldly consequence.

When I think about the disparity of the haves and the have nots of the world, and the actual worldly figures at the helm … that saddens me too.

Do we simply have to accept bad government, and bad actors making bad decisions at the behest of ‘fat haves’ ??

Does evil have to coexist with good?? Well … if ya know anything about the absolute power of good, then you know which end to put your weight on.

How do you fair when called upon to do the right thing , or set a good example??

Are you a good person simply because you think you are, or think you should be …which is the greater question.

Think about this …

If everything in your world were just peachy …all tickety boo (is that an Irish expression?) Would you care about the less fortunate, stand in those difficult fires for the greater good??

I was watching a wonderful symphony one evening , and I was struck by the spectacle of luxury and opulence of the surroundings. I thought 'how can these people have so much when there are so many who have nothing?’ I further thought 'why should I care?’

The bigger consideration is, can luxury exist among extreme poverty??

Are you a bad person because we choose to look the other way, or are you a good person because you chose to leave your comfy environment and pitch in for the greater good? My guess is that we are somewhere in between as such pondering is difficult and p'haps complicated for most. But I know where I'd put my pesos 😊

The concept of ‘ not in my backyard' is intriguing in terms of struggling with issues of feathering one’s nest and sharing the wealth. A great swathe of us esp. families are just trying to make ends meet and eke out a little joy in life.

Is there joy in poverty? No. Is there goodness in wealth? Yes if kept in proper balance and not contributing to the poverty glut.

Do we sacrifice beauty and luxury when we choose to give of ourselves and share our wealth??

Well … in my not so cozy part of the world the haves are not grappling with these issues near enough, so it's up to us to get down in the mire and pull together to gain a greater share of our just desserts …. that’s quite an image 😊

Those fat haves who feast large will choke on their ill- gotten gains and realize that they have gone a bridge too far and are beyond redeeming themselves. (Another great movie)
